Oi gênte! Thank you for visiting and helping us matar saudades. "A turma toda" would love it if you would Write A Few Words to our guestbook! You may need to hit your "reload" button to see your message appear. "Depois que tu partiste tudo aqui ficou tao triste . . ." Welcome back. It's good to hear from you again. Remember when you promised to write? Now is your chance.
Click here to download the latest alumni list from Wally Perkins. And it's all legal
now. WinZip made the file "self-executing." That means after it's downloaded,
click on it and watch it expand. It will turn into (9) nine .XLS files, that can then be
looked at through Excel, WordPerfect, and Word. Don't try to look at the zipped file in
those programs without first UNZIPPING them. E claro . . .

Just bought WinZip program, so now all downloads from the EA alumni download list are legal. I have yet to install it, though. Give me until tonight, when I plan to update the alumni information with the latest received from Wally Perkins. What a great job he's doing.
P.S. Scot, thanks for the Embassy story, but we're waiting on the Bonde Story still.
Any time, man.

Another landmark from our time in Rio is on the market. The U.S. Consulate building,
which was the U.S. Embassy from 1952
until whenever they actually relocated the embassy to Brasilia, is on the market for R $42
million. After bomb attacks on U.S. embassies in Africa, it was decided that this building
could not be made secure. A new consulate is going to be built in a location yet to be
determined, maybe in Botafogo, maybe somewhere else. And by the way, hello to John Warren.
I was in Mimi's class from the 2nd to the 5th grade, with Randy Hayes and Ricky Wakeman
and Monica Fielden and Lizzie Fonseca, among many others that Mimi will probably remember.

I'm wondering if anyone has been serving as president or secretary or agent or coordinator for their EARJ class. At the Barulho Brasileiro in Cape Cod (1995) I saw an SPGS alumni newsletter, and in the back there was a page listing all the "class agents." I don't know what the duties of an SPGS class agent are, but it was interesting that each class had one.
Since 1995, I've been serving as the unofficial president/secretary for the EARJ Class of 1965. This involves keeping the class address list up-to-date (over 100 classmates), finding missing classmates (14 last year and 20 so far this year), facilitating an "email club" (60 members), and publishing a class newsletter once or twice a year.
In the past, while trying to find missing '65 classmates, I have occasionally
located EARJ alumni from other classes. Sometimes they ask who is the president/secretary
for *their* class, and I have to tell them that as far as I know, I am the only one.
Several people -- including Bruce Stirling '70, Wally Perkins '63, Dave McGuerty '72,
Miriam Baum '68, and Suelena Vieira '65 -- are working on or have worked on general EA
alumni activities. But does anyone know of anyone else doing alumni coordination
activities for their class? I would be interested in learning who these people might be
and contacting them to "compare notes." Thanks... Kenny Mertz '65

I remember my very first day at EA in 1974. I could not speak a word of English.
How badly I wanted to talk with everyone, share laughter, and become part of the group.
When I had to leave Rio in 1977, how badly I wanted to graduate with rest of my
friends(class of 81). My love for EA still remains unchanged.

Attended EA from 1958 to 1969 but my "class" is class of '70. My father, Bill
Warren, was pastor of International Baptist Church. My oldest brother, Bill, Jr.,
graduated in '66 (he was killed in an Air Force plane crash in '76). My other brother,
Jack (class of '68), is married and has two daughters and one son and teaches school in
Crowley, Texas. My sister Mimi (would have been class of 72), lives in Ft Worth, Texas,
married and has two sons. My youngest sister, Jaynanne (attended EA through sixth grade)
also teaches school, is married and has two sons and one daughter. I am in the Air Force
(for 23 years), have been married for 25 years and we have nine (9) children and three
grandchildren. We homeschool our children and have sent three off to college already. Have
literally been around the world in the AF (Mississippi, England, Texas, Colorado, Hawaii
(twice), California, DC, Virginia, Indiana, Germany, Bosnia, Angola (South Africa),
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia..!

Found this most emotion jerking site while searching for an EA website. Thanks to all who contribute to the alumni site(s) and help keep those rich and treasured memories of years at EA fresh in our minds. I note a dearth of class of '75 entries, so post an APB for people I remember and wish I had not lost contact with over the years. Fatima Ferreira, John Bloomfield, Ann Bloomfield, Barbara Butler, John Sowers, Eddie Salles, Dave(y)Jones, Mimi Blackler, Chuck Blackler, Baldwin Drout, Graham Drout, The Brost Twins (Karen ? and?)from Texas (yay Texas!). I'll think of some more names for next post.
Does anyone remember the Richie Havens concert in the recess patio outside the cafeteria at the old school in Leblon? Unforgettable...I still have one of his guitar picks :-)
I miss the Kibon ice cream/popsicle rolling stand outside the old school... Coco(nut)
was my favorite.

I heard from some obscure gossip source that the Rev. Jim Jones of poison Kool Aid fame
was once a teacher at EA. Anybody know if this is true? And, if true, anybody took his his
courses? And, if so, what was he like as a teacher? Enquiring minds....

Thanks Patrick and Sussi for the Happy 40th Birthday wishes!! Yes, I did have a great
time in Tahiti celebrating. I also had the opportunity to go to Rio in August and spent 10
days there. Had a great time and Rio looked very beautiful! Was good to visit with old EA
friends too. Was just looking over the letters and wanted to say hello to Donald and
Clayton Seeley and also to James (and Carol) Tolbert. I do not know if you remember James,
but I was a good friend of Monica Glidewell's (any news of her??). Lastly, thanks again to
all that make this a great EA webpage!!

I graduated from Escola Americana in 1970. I was also a cheerleader, so hopefully
there are some "old people" that remember me. I would like to hear from
some of my classmates from 1968 to 1970, if there is anyone also on this web space.
I live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma now. I enjoyed all my years there in Rio and met a
lot of wonderful people. I would very much like to return to Rio. It is a
beautiful city. Again, if there is anyone out there, I would very much like to hear
from you. Sincerely, Marty (Arambula) Drabek

I came across this notice on the Internet. It reports the passing of a former EA
teacher. "Ruth C. Harpel '24, June 1993. A native of Lebanon, Ruth was head of
the English Department at Lebanon High School and later was state supervisor of English
with the Montana State Department of Public Instruction. For three years she taught
English and Latin at the American School in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was also a
Fulbright scholar in England."
