My mother, Mary Jean Congdon (now Stirling), was a WAC in WWII. She was at the Battle of Britain and at the Battle of the Bulge, where she and fellow WACs were sent out with flashlights and clubs to look for Nazi soldiers masquerading as nuns.  She returned from Europe aboard the TSS Athos II, which was severely damaged in a hurricane.  The U.S.S. Enterprise picked them up in the Azores and brought them home.  Read the news story about it.  Mom walked off the ship.

Looking for support from the WACs I'm the Chief of Training at the USARAK NCO Academy (Fort Richardson, Alaska) and during our graduations we have different soldiers walk out on stage wearing uniforms from the Civil War to a current Arctic uniform. What we don't have is an WACs uniform. We've been asked several times why we don't reconize the WACs but the truth is I can't seem to find one. Any help out there from an old soldier that would donate her uniform? Please contact me at robert.steele@richardson.army.mil. I will return all messages.Thank you SFC Steele

I'm Teresa (Marocux) Rael. I completed Basic Training at Ft. McLellan, Alabama in August 1973. My 19th birthday was spent in Basic! AIT was at Ft. Rucker, Alabama; Flight Dispatcher. Stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado. Honorably discharched June 1974 when I became pregnant with my first daughter. My (former) husband and I enlisted together; first (I think!) married couple from the state of Maine to enlist together after Army changed regs to allow for that. I'm very proud to be a veteran and a Vietnam Era veteran. Much of my focus is on reminding people that Women are Veterans too!!

Very Very nice site.....I was truly impressed. My husband's aunt, Esther Lasco was in the service in WW2 and we are desperately searching for any record of her military service. I have one large photo (official) of her and about 8 other women. I had numberous friendship notes on the reverse. It refers to them missing her at Lemoore. If there is anyone out there who can suggest where I might find some assistance, it would be much appreciated. She has passed away and we would like to pay tribute to her, if possible......Thank You so much, Peggy Paterchak rv64@lor.net

Judy Jett and I were marrried at Fort Ord California on February 2,1962. We are attempting to reestablish contact with a Maid of Honor, Mary Andrews Conley, who served with Judy at Fort Ord during 1960-1962. Mary married Jerry Conley and moved to Warren Michigan in approximately April 1962. They had two daughters. We lost contact with them when we went to Germany in 1976. We believe that Mary and Jerry divorced sometimes in the mid to late 70s but are not sure. We were not able to re-establish contact when we returned to the states in late 1979. We would like to re-establish contact with all of the wedding party and have them at our 50th Wedding Aniversary Celebration on February 2, 2012. We would appreciate anyone having any information about Mary or her daughters contacting us at our current e-mail address, fcprater@adelphia.net. We would appreciate any assistance that you may give. I 'googled' an old friend I lost the year my only daughter was born. She was 'lost' to me in that she committed suicide. She was in your army and she was a mixed up, very depressed young woman when she went in. She sought help from a military psychiatrist who didn't help, but instead became her lover and perhaps another stepping stone on the way to her eventual self destruction. Her name was Kelly Noverr and she was a dear friend from grade school who kept in touch until shortly before she died in 1985. I would love to hear from her sister Kathy if she ever stumbles upon this (or anyone else who knew her). My e-mail address is Mojoputts@hotmail.com. My maiden name is Mary Swain. I still miss you, Kelly.

I was one of the first women to be assigned with men for basic training at Ft. Jackson S.C. in November 1977. I was assigned to A-3-1, for anyone who knows, that's Tank Hill. Our drills were Blackmon, Cherry(female) and Senior Drill Wertman. During training our Pallas Athene's were taken and we were given the regular army brass logo. Our cycle was long because of the Christmas break (yes, we had to leave and come back!) We ended in January 1978. It was tough, they hadn't yet established women's PT standards, so we had to keep up with the guys in every way. Our PT was exactly the same as the guys, push ups and all! We got to know the Front Leaning Rest position quite intimately! There were only about 30 women in our company to 100 men. I can only remember two girls names at the time, Lisa Paradiso and Dawn Inman. I remember Lisa cuz she was always smiling and Dawn had her foot locker dumped out the barracks window, I guess cuz it wasn't secured, and I remember DS Blackman standing on the front steps of our crusty old barracks holding up a pair of panties asking "Whose are these?" It brings up quite the memory. I remember Dawn whispering that it was her trunk but there was no way she was claiming those panties! LOL Our barracks were old, WW2, wooden, drafty, bunkstyle rickety beds, with floors that need polishing all the time, and when we first moved in to our new "homes" the bathrooms looked like they hadn't been used in 20 years. I think they opened those barracks special for us ladies. The only male thrill, at least the one that I'll admit to here, was watching the guys do "fire drills" around their barracks in their underwear! And I know anyone who went through it, remembers fondly, whistle drills in the "pit". I spent my 19th birthday on bivuoc, but I wouldn't change a bit of it. I remember seeing all those guys when I got off the bus (cattle car) and thinking "they made a mistake, my recruiter said that there would be guys here, but I wouldn't be training with them!" Yeah, and where are the condo's right? Anyway, I think we were 3rd or 4th platoon in Alpha Company 3rd Battalion 1st Brigade, Tank Hill. I would love to hear from anyone who was part of that time with me. We can laugh about how many beers we could consume at the little Tank Hill PX when we got to go in for an hour! My name then was PVT (Tracey) Booth, and I was a squad leader for a short time. I also remember a Linda Middleton, she would always call her kids. Hope to hear from someone. Just put Ft. Jackson in the subject line of an email. Jackson952001@yahoo.com (the Jackson part is my dog's name)

My name is Charlotte (DeRego).Joined the WAC in June 1964. Went to a recruiting session with my best friend Phyllis Rodrigues to get out of a history test!!  Took my basic trng. at Ft.McLellan, AL. Then on to San Antonio, Texas for basic medical trng & then on to NeuroPsychiatric at Letterman General.  It was a great adventure & learning experience.  In basic we were referred to as "Pineapples", being from Hawaii & got to sing our barracks to sleep every night.  I don't remember names off hand .  I am so proud of having served in the WAC.  I am so very proud to be an American.  God bless the USA.

For those of you who do not speak French, this is a translation of the posting above. I thought it was very sweet and something that we always must keep in mind - there are grateful allies.

My name is Linda Book and I served the WAC from October 1974 through October 1976. I went through basic training in Fort McClellan, Alabama and then was sent to Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC for AIT. I left Fort Jackson on April 1, 1975 and was sent to AMSF, Area Maintenance & Supply Facility, in Mannheim, Germany where I served the remainder of my duty. The first years after I was discharged I kept in contact with a few of my friends but after that I have not contacted anyone I served with. I live in Pittsburgh, PA which is where I was born. My email address is lbook@corporateairllc.com. I have worked the past 19 years for a private aviation company from whom I earned my private pilot's license in 1981. Alot of people come and go here at the Allegheny County Airport so I would love someone to drop in on me sometime. Or at least email me! I will write again as I want to try to remember some names that may draw attention out there.

My mother, Gilda (Pellegrini) Barr of Mansfield, MA enlisted in the US Military in February of 1943 as a WAC and trained initially at Ft. DesMoine, was assigned to Adminstration School, then was ordered to the 2nd Air Force at Salina Air Force Base in Kansas. Next, she was ordered to Ft. Oglethorpe to train for overseas and eventually landed in England, with the 9th Air Force at Ascot. D-Plus 100, she crossed the channel to Chantilly, France and after VE day, went to Germany at Bad Kissangen. In the States and England, she worked in Central Files, compiling war statistics for morning briefings; then in France became the secretary to the Assistant Director of U.S. Intelligence. She was discharged in November 1945. At 91 years old (in a week,) she is quite active but is sad as most of her contemporaries are gone.
